022C Leucillin Horseware Ireland Handicap & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Roman General, placed second, ridden by W.J. Lee, and trained by Mr. Edward Lynam.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Mr. Lynam stated that, as his charge had previously run keenly under rider J. P. Murtagh, he instructed today’s rider to get the colt to switch off, drop him in and ride him out to the finish as the animal failed to finish well in recent races. He felt that in running the leader had initially steadied the pace before quickening which left his horse flatfooted. He added that he was very satisfied with the ride.
In his evidence W.J. Lee confirmed the instructions and stated that the change in tactics possibly did not allow his mount to carry him throughout the race and that the horse was caught flatfooted when the pace quickened. He added that he was continuously squeezing his mount and that the horse eventually ran on well. He added that, in his opinion, the horse may need a slightly longer trip of perhaps one mile and two furlongs to be effective.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Roman General coughed twice when leaving the Veterinary Unit, but was otherwise found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered. In addition, the Stewards complimented the manner in which W.J. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were
of the opinion that D.A. Parkes was in breach of R10 (2)(b) in that he used his whip when his chance or winning or being placed was clearly gone. The Stewards therefore severely cautioned him.

Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (17th, 24th February and 2nd March).

Mr. Codd reported that the horse’s penultimate run was in a Grade two bumper at Navan, where he travelled well to the turn in, but became very tired and was eased in the closing stages. He reported that he was very disappointed with the animal’s next start at Leopardstown, which was his first run over hurdles. He said he had him dropped in, but that the horse jumped the first two hurdles slowly and never really got competitive after. He said nothing untoward showed up after that race. He instructed that the horse be ridden more positively today and given lots of light at his hurdles. He said the animal travelled much better today and that the change in tactics may have brought about any apparent improvement.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

Mr. Rothwell reported that his charge has run in cheekpieces in the past, but they did not seem to have any positive effect on the horse in his previous race so he declared him with blinkers for the first time today. He reported that any apparent improvement could be attributed to this.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
