Fairyhouse Meeting, 21st November 2012

316A Racegoers €25 Package 3-y-o Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed H.D. Dunne, rider, and Paul W. Flynn, trainer, concerning the actions of Crystal Wings in this race, where he baulked dramatically approaching the second hurdle and unseated the rider.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence H.D. Dunne explained that his instructions were to get a lead over the first couple of hurdles and get the horse to jump. However, after getting a lead over the first hurdle, his mount became keen and took up the running approaching the second hurdle, where he baulked dramatically and unseated him.
In his evidence Paul W. Flynn confirmed the instructions. He explained how this horse is a quirky sort, who has worn blinkers on the flat in the past. He said the horse did plenty of schooling at home, but always with a lead horse and there was never a problem. He said that it now appears essential his charge will need a lead in his races in future.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered by Mr Flynn.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Casual Creeper, trained by Noel Meade, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

316F New Self Service Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Eoin Doyle, trainer of the winner For A Finish, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s most recent run over hurdles at Gowran Park on the 6th October where he finished 18th of 20 runners and was beaten approximately 66 lengths.
Ray Cody, authorised representative for the trainer, reported that the horse was having his first run back at Gowran Park and that he was very disappointing, although nothing came to light subsequently. He stated that the horse ran without blinkers on that occasion and this may have explained the lacklustre performance. Subsequent to that he said the horse ran twice over fences with cheekpieces and ran well on the first occasion before not staying the distance in the Cork National. He concluded by saying that the re-application of blinkers today may have brought about any apparent improvement in form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

The representative reported that this was the horse’s first run on the flat for Peter McCreery, having been with a different trainer last year. He explained that the trainer ran the horse twice in September over hurdles on soft and heavy ground, which did not seem to suit the animal. Today the animal appreciated the better surface and the application of blinkers for the first time and these combined may have brought about the apparent improvement in form.
