Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.

The Stewards authorised the following substitution of rider at this meeting: Mr. G.B. Waters replaced Mr. C.S. McGuinness (injured) on Thunder Hill, trained by Mr. L. McHugh (sixth race).

170A Athleague Maiden Hurdle The Stewards requested a report from Mr. E. McNamara, trainer of the winner Medicinal Compound (GB), regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s previous form.
Mr. McNamara reported that this was only the horse’s second run for him after he bought the animal in October last year. He explained that the horse had lots of minor problems which meant that it was June before he got him to the track. On that occasion, the rider jumped off near the rear of the field and the horse was reluctant to race and almost refused at the first hurdle. On this occasion he instructed his jockey to ride the horse more handily and have him in the middle of horses early so as to concentrate his mind. He reported that this change in tactics, coupled with the fact that his horses are running better of late and the fact the horse showed normal improvement for his first run of the year, may have brought about any apparent improvement in form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

The Stewards enquired into the conduct and behaviour in the closing stages of P. Townend, rider of Mulleady, placed third, after he gave the impression of hitting his mount four times with his whip on the run in, when in reality he failed to connect with any of them.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who admitted he failed to hit his mount on these four occasions. He said that in his opinion he had given the mare a bad ride and left her with too much to do. He said he was caught in two minds between hitting his mount or going easy on her as he felt he was always going to obtain his best possible finishing position of third place.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that P. Townend was in breach of Rule 272 in that his conduct and behaviour was prejudicial to the integrity, proper conduct and good reputation of horseracing. Having taken into account his good disciplinary record in general, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (24th, 26th and 28th July).

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Easy Reach, ridden by R.C. Colgan, and trained by Mrs Gillian Callaghan.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence R.C. Colgan stated that his instructions were to drop his mount in, get him settled, creep away into the race and finish as best as he could. He said he missed the start and felt that the field went a real good gallop. He thought halfway down the back that the field would come back to him and he pushed his mount along. On the turn for home, he gave his mount a smack of the whip, but felt that the horse did not pick up so from that point on he rode him hands and heels as best he could to the line.
In her evidence Mrs Gillian Callaghan confirmed the instructions and told how this was only the animal’s second start for her. She said the horse can be tricky at home and can be keen. She said that on the horse’s first run for her his jumping was sketchy, possibly because he had fallen on his previous start over hurdles. Because of that the aim today was to get him settled and get him jumping. She said her rider reported that the horse was outpaced over today’s trip and they will now look to step him up in trip in future. The trainer also expressed satisfaction with the ride, but added that maybe he could have had the horse handier in the earlier stages.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer which stated that Easy Reach was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations of both rider and trainer, while they advised R.C. Colgan to be seen to make more effort in future.

vidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his mount had nothing more to give and was curling up under him late on.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that P.W. Flood was in breach of Rule 212 (a) (i) in that he had failed to obtain his best possible placing and they therefore suspended him for five race days (24th, 26th, 28th, 30th and 31st July) and ordered that he forfeit his riding fee.

Geoghegan, and Thunder Hill, ridden by Mr. G.B. Watters, both of whom were brought down.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned with the exception of Mr. G.B. Watters, who had departed the racecourse for further medical attention.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. Burns was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (24th, 26th and 28th July).

The Stewards enquired into possible interference around the home turn involving the winner Connaught Manor, ridden by Mr. P.W. Mullins, Top Cat Henry, placed second, ridden by Mr. J.E. Burns, and Really Smart, ridden by Mr. D. Skehan, placed third. $Z
