161B jogforjockeys.ie Handicap & The Stewards enquired into possible interference in the closing stages involving the winner Balladiene, ridden by R.P. Whelan, Daring Man, ridden by R. Coakley, placed third, and Fit The Cove, ridden by D.M. Grant, placed fourth, after it appeared that the latter suffered interference.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned in the presence of Mr. D.W. Cullen, trainer, representing Mr. K.J. Condon, trainer, and master of R. Coakley.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Daring Man had improved his finishing position in relation to Fit The Cove as a result of this interference and they therefore amended the result to read as follows: First: Balladiene, Second: Jumbo Steps, Third: Fit The Cove, Fourth: Daring Man.
The Stewards were also of the opinion that R. Coakley was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly, and having taken his good record in this regard into account, they therefore severely cautioned him.

161E Kilkenny Handicap & The Stewards interviewed C.D. Hayes, rider of the winner Potomac, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.

In  his evidence D.M. Grant admitted that he edged across a little before the marker poles while being aware of horses on his inside. K.J. Manning felt that he was onto the rails quickly and did not make any manoeuvre. L.F. Roche stated that he felt he was pushed out slightly by Naoise which left him on the heels of Fit The Cove with whom his mount clipped heels and he was unseated.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.M. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence P.J. Smullen stated that his instructions were to sit on the heels of the leaders, get his mount settled and finish as best as he could. He stated that the filly is small and weak and that on today’s testing ground she began to struggle after three furlongs. He said that she ran green around the turn and lost her position and was struggling turning into the straight. Thereafter he said he rode his mount home as best as he could considering how she travelled in the testing conditions. In conclusion he stated that if he was any harder on her or resorted to the whip she would have fallen in a hole and finished further behind.
In her evidence Ms. Morgan confirmed the instructions and stated that her charge is a weak filly who is a poor eater. She said she was not sure before the race if the filly would handle today’s conditions but she needed to find out for sure. The fact that the horse did not handle the conditions was confirmed to her by today’s rider. She also stated that the filly was headstrong and given all these factors, expressed satisfaction with the ride.
