Kennedy, rider of Wicklow Lad (GB), R.P. Treacy, rider of Maccas Lad, and B.F. Having viewed the recording of the incident and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that all four riders were in breach of Rule 208 (f) in that they failed to comply with an instruction from the Starter.

032E Flyingbolt Novice Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from  Henry de Bromhead, trainer of the winner Buckers Bridge, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s most recent run at Fairyhouse on 2nd December 2012, where he finished last of five runners and was beaten approximately 102 lengths.
Mr de Bromhead reported that prior to the horse’s run at Fairyhouse, the animal had an extremely tough race when beating Sword Of Destiny at Punchestown with 55 lengths back to the third. He said that at Fairyhouse the horse ran prominently but cut out completely and was probably feeling the effects of his previous hard race. After Fairyhouse the horse was given a month off to freshen up, and he returned to his good level of form today.
Having considered the report, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered.

032G Dunsany (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards interviewed A.J. Martin, trainer, regarding the withdrawal of his charge Quickpick Vic from this race, with the excuse ‘no suitable rider’.

In his evidence Mr Martin explained that the owner of Quickpick Vic was not prepared to run in another bumper unless Mr R.P. McNamara was available to ride him as the latter got on so well with the horse in his previous race. He explained that Mr McNamara had a fall after declaration time yesterday and confirmed this morning that he would be unable to take the ride today.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that A.J. Martin was in breach of Rule 194 in that the reason for non running was not a valid one. The Stewards therefore fined him €300 and suspended Quickpick Vic from running for two days.

Mr. Cawley reported that he had no real explanation for any apparent improvement in form today. He explained that this is an eight year old maiden, whose form has been inconsistent. He stated that prior to the Limerick run, the horse had run well at Thurles when finishing sixth and was beaten 16 lengths. He said that he thought the horse would run well at Limerick subsequently, but he ran disappointingly, with no apparent explanation. He concluded by saying that he ran the horse today more in hope than expectation, but that the animal won in what he thought was a weak race.

Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who admitted that he had used his whip with his arm above shoulder height.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that M.A. Cleere was in breach of Regulation 10 3.(g) in that he used his whip with his arm above shoulder height.
Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (8th, 15th and 22nd March) and ordered that he attend R.A.C.E. for a one day tuition on the correct use of the whip.

The Stewards interviewed J.R. Banahan, Turf Club Starter, and J.P. O’Brien, rider, in relation to the start of this race.
In his evidence J.P. O’Brien stated that his horse was hooded for stalls entry. He said that in the stalls he had difficulty removing the hood as it had become entangled in the bridle. He eventually managed to remove the hood as the stalls opened and ended up missing the break as a consequence. He had called out but at that stage the stalls opened. In his opinion he felt that Mr Banahan may not have heard his call as another rider, P.J. Smullen, had called out at the same time.
In his evidence Mr. Banahan stated that P.J. Smullen’s horse had become unruly in the stalls and once that rider had shouted that he was okay, he started the race. He was unaware of any problem with J.P. O’Brien’s horse.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards accepted the explanations offered and took no further action.

Evidence was heard from the rider concerned and from George Murphy, representing the trainer concerned.
In his evidence D.A. McCormack stated that his instructions were to jump out and take his time as this filly can run free and get her to finish out her race. He stated that he was struggling with his weight and had wasted to take this ride. He further stated that he cramped during the race and was perhaps not riding to his best. During the race the filly ran keen and he settled her and was happy throughout the race. However, he felt that in the straight her chance had gone and he was not hard on her as she was not going to win.  He said that felt that his first attempt at using the whip missed, but he continued to hit his mount thereafter with the whip in the forehand position. In his opinion the filly had improved from her run last week, but she still may need another run, while her ideal trip could be a mile and two furlongs or further.
In his evidence George Murphy confirmed the trainer’s instructions and added that the filly was to be put to sleep and was to be ridden to finish the race as best as possible. He expressed himself happy with the ride given. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that Kiss Goodnight was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found Mr Murphy to be in breach of Rule 212 (a) and fined him €1500 through his representative and suspended Kiss Goodnight for 42 days. 036A Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of South South West, ridden by Andrew J. McNamara, and trained by Patrick J. Flynn.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Andrew J. McNamara stated that his instructions were to get a lead if possible and to do his best thereafter. He said his mount ran a little keen early, but having gotten a lead early on, his horse moved up alongside the leader by halfway. He said that at this point his mount began to lean out to the left, and from there on until turning for home the horse intermittently hung left.  He said that turning for home, the animal lost ground trying to get around the bend. He concluded by stating that from then on he pushed his mount out hands and heels as he never felt he could improve his finishing position of third because the animal was not going as well as the two leaders up the home straight.
In his evidence Patrick J. Flynn confirmed the instructions and outlined the history of the horse, including how he has hung in almost every race to date, and almost ran off the track in a flat race at Wexford. He expressed satisfaction with the ride, stating that he felt his rider had achieved his best possible placing.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that South South West had a wolf tooth on the left side of his mouth.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered, but reminded Andrew J. McNamara of his future responsibilities to report in the first instance anything which may have affected the running of his horse.

036F John McCarthy Memorial Hunters Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from B.R. Hamilton, trainer of the winner Warne, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s most recent run at Leopardstown on 9th February where he finished 9th of 12 finishers and was beaten 32 lengths.
Peter Magill, authorised representative of the trainer, reported that at Leopardstown last time the horse came to the second last with every chance, only to fade in the latter stages on the very heavy ground. He said that on today’s better ground and over a shorter trip, the horse returned to form. He also said that these two factors may have brought about any apparent improvement in form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

The Stewards received a request from A.J. Martin, trainer of Northern Alliance, to substitute the nominated rider Mr J.T. Carroll with Mr S. Crawford, as Mr Carroll did not make it to the track on time after riding at a Point to Point earlier in the day at Cork.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards authorised the substitution but referred the matter to the Chief Executive of the Turf Club for further investigation.

The Stewards interviewed Mr A.J. Clifford, rider of Robert An Ri, unplaced, concerning his use of the whip between the second last and last fence in this race.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
