In his evidence A.P. Crowe stated that he was instructed to jump off mid division and to do his best without hitting the front before the last hurdle. He also said he was instructed not to use the whip as this was a green four year old having his first run. He said that in running he was satisfied that his charge was carrying him well and held a good position on the outside. However, he said his mount was backing away from another runner that was jumping indifferently. He added that he was well positioned on the home turn and had the leaders covered, but that he waited with his mount to get a lead to the final hurdle. He said his horse got under that obstacle, however, and lost ground while both the winner and the second got away from it well. He concluded by stating that his mount ran on under a hands and heels ride without ever looking like finishing second.
In his evidence Mr. Berry confirmed the instructions and expressed his satisfaction with the ride. He added that A.P. Crowe was not particularly tied down to a whip instruction, but that his mount is only a four year old having his first run. He added that it has not yet been decided whether this gelding will run in a bumper or stay hurdling for the foreseeable future.
