203B Follow Naas On Facebook Handicap & The Stewards interviewed Patrick Downey, trainer of Three Bells, in relation to the saddling of his charge prior to this race where it appeared that the horse was saddled incorrectly and was ultimately withdrawn for refusing to load after he proved unruly while an attempt was being made to re-saddle him down at the start.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that his charge is a difficult horse which needs to go down to the start early as he needs time to load. The trainer explained that he received the saddle late from the horse’s rider J.P. O’Brien, who had won the previous race. He admitted that he rushed the saddling procedure in an attempt to get the horse to the start early and obviously this led to him making the mistake. Mr. Downey apologised to the Stewards.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Patrick Downey was in breach of Regulation 12 in that he saddled his charge incorrectly. The Stewards therefore cautioned him regarding his future responsibilities in this regard, while they also ordered that Three Bells be re-certified prior to being declared to run from stalls again.
R.P. Cleary, rider of Statue Of Dreams, trained by Noel Lawlor, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount stood in the stalls when they opened and lost considerable ground as a consequence.

McConnell, trainer of the winner Rockview Emperor, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s most recent run at Down Royal on 26th July, where he finished 10th of 14 runners and was beaten 12 lengths.
Mr McConnell reported that his charge met with interference in the race at Down Royal and was bumped out to his left. He said that the horse had a tendency to keep lugging left thereafter, and consequently never really got back into the race. His rider subsequently advised him to run the horse on a left handed track, and this may have brought about any apparent improvement.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
C.T. Keane, rider of Runaiocht, trained by Michael C. Connell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost his action and was therefore pulled up.

Mr Bolger reported that his charge is a tricky filly who on her day has stacks of ability, but you can never be certain which filly will turn up. He added that, in hindsight, one mile four furlongs on heavy ground at Tipperary on her second last start may have stretched her, but apart from this he could not offer any further explanation for any apparent improvement in form.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

In his evidence Adrian Maguire stated that this horse has recovered from a leg injury which led to an absence from the track of eighteen months and that he only came back to action at Killarney on 18th July. He said that, in his opinion, the horse had improved from that run and explained that he instructed J.S. McGarvey to look after the horse today, do his best and finish as close as possible. He felt that the horse jumped better today, travelled well during the race before tiring in the straight. He concluded by stating that he expects further improvement from the horse following today’s race and was satisfied with the ride.
In his evidence J.S. McGarvey confirmed the instructions. He said that his mount is not the quickest horse, but travelled well and was always well balanced until tiring in the straight from which point he was outpaced. 204B Cork Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Nurse Ryan, ridden by S.J. Hassett, and trained by Martin Hassett.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence Martin Hassett stated that he instructed the rider to follow Ruby Walsh, sit in and come with one late run. He added that his instructions did not materialise from the start and consequently his charge was left with too much to do. He did, however, state that he felt the horse has not been giving her all this year and said that it is now proving difficult to get her to give of her best based on the ability she previously showed.
In his evidence S.J. Hassett stated that his mount was slightly impeded at the start, whereas Ruby Walsh’s horse jumped off smartly and consequently could not adhere to the given instructions. He said that he still managed to get in a good position at the final bend and thought that it was just a matter of asking his mount to quicken. However, he said that his mount was one paced when asked to quicken after the third last hurdle. He said that she missed the second last, picked up going to the last and eventually ran on to finish fourth.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, which stated that Nurse Ryan was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
