Mr. J.L. Gleeson (Rider) Appeal – Dundalk 3rd March 2023

The Appeals Body, Mr. Nicholas Wachman (in the chair), Mr. John Murphy and Mr. Julian Gaisford-St. Lawrence convened at Offices of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board on Friday 10th March 2023 to consider the appeal of Mr. John Gleeson (Rider) against the decision of the Stewards at Dundalk on 3rd March 2023.

On the day, following the running of the View Restaurant At Dundalk Qualified Riders Handicap, the Raceday Stewards enquired into an incident in the home straight involving Dancing Tango, ridden by Mr. J.L. Gleeson, Burren Song, ridden by Mr. A.P. Ryan, where it appeared Dancing Tango made an inward manoeuvre and made contact with Burren Song. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Raceday Stewards found Mr. Gleeson in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly and suspended him for one raceday.

The grounds of appeal lodged by Mr. Gleeson was that the Stewards on the day erred in their decision.

At the Appeal Hearing, evidence was heard from Mr. Gleeson and the committee also watched a recording of the race.

In his evidence, Mr. Gleeson stated that his mount hung left throughout the race and he had tried his best to keep her straight at all times. He stated that he had his two hands on the reins in an attempt to keep his mount straight when she shot to her left. Mr. Gleeson accepted that there was room to his right but said he was unable to get her to go right as she was constantly lugging to her left. Mr. Gleeson added that there was a gap in front of him and he was attempting to let her ease through the gap but at this point his mount shot violently to the left, accidentality causing him to make contact with Mr. Ryan’s mount, Burren Song, who was also coming right marginally.

Having considered the evidence, the Appeals Body dismissed the appeal.

Suspension Dates: 17th March 2023
