The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) has today announced the appointment of Liam Walsh as Senior Stipendiary Steward.
Mr. Walsh, who takes over the role from Peter Matthews following his retirement this year, joined the Turf Club in 2005 beginning as Point to Point Stewards Secretary before becoming a Racing Official on the Racecourse in 2007, working as a Stewards Secretary, Judge and Veterinary Assistant. Liam became full-time in 2015 and added Clerk of the Scales to his duties.
Since 2019, Liam’s key responsibility has been as a Stipendiary Steward on racedays as well as presenting disciplinary hearings.
Liam Walsh commented: “I am honoured to have been appointed as Senior Stipendiary Steward. I am passionate about Irish racing and am very fortunate to have dedicated colleagues, who have always been a great assistance to me in my time with the IHRB and previously in the Turf Club. The safety of all Riders and Horses is of paramount importance to everyone working within the IHRB and ensuring the safety of our participants during racing will be a key priority for me. I want to thank the Board of Directors for giving me this opportunity and look forward to the challenge.”
Welcoming the appointment, Darragh O’Loughlin, CEO of the IHRB added: “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Liam on his appointment to the position of Senior Stipendiary Steward and very much look forward to working with him in that role. Liam brings a wealth of experience to this position from his many years of working in the Stewards Room and also in other areas of the organisation and I have no doubt he will make a meaningful difference in this new role.”
