Irish Racing Calendar, 19th September 2013

The following trainer was fined 200 euros for the non-notification of a Veterinary Certificate in accordance with the provision of Rule 194(v) (vi):- J.A. Nash for Trans City (stone bruise) at Clonmel on 5th September.

Mrs Mary Whelehan, trainer of That’s Our Luck, reported to the Office of the Governing Bodies on Tuesday 10th September that her charge has had a wind operation since her last run at Kilbeggan 23rd August, 2013.

P.D. Deegan, trainer of English Deer, reported to the Office of the Governing Bodies on Thursday 12th September that his charge has had a wind operation since his last run at Down Royal 13th September, 2013.

Curragh Meeting, 1st September 2013

238C Dance Design Stakes & D.K. Weld, trainer of Along Came Casey, reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries on Wednesday 4th September that his charge was found to be in season post race.

Galway Meeting, 9th September 2013

246B Maggie May’s Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident shortly after leaving the stalls involving Maal, ridden by C.R. King, placed second, Senor George, ridden by I.T. Queally, placed fourth, and Flawless Filly, ridden by C.D. Hayes, unplaced, after it appeared that both Maal and Senor George suffered interference. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned, in the presence of trainers David Marnane, representing C.R. King’s master David Wachman, and C.P. Donoghue, representing I.T. Queally’s master Patrick J. Flynn. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were unable to apportion blame to any rider and therefore considered the interference to be accidental in nature, and took no further action.

D.P. McDonogh, rider of Cairdiuil, trained by I. Madden, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran flat in this race.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Cairdiuil at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

246C Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Median Auction Fillies Maiden & The Stewards enquired into possible interference on the turn for home involving Tuilelaith, ridden by C.R. King, placed third, and Trikala, ridden by C.D. Hayes, placed fourth, after it appeared that Trikala suffered interference. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned, and from H. Rogers, trainer of Tuilelaith, representing C.R. King’s master, David Wachman. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that interference had taken place, but they could not be satisfied that Tuilelaith had improved her finishing position as a result of this interference. The Stewards therefore made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.

246D James P. Cunningham Electrical Handicap & The Stewards informed A. Oliver, trainer of Ace Pearl (USA), which refused to race, that a repeat performance by his charge could render the horse liable for suspension in the future. Furthermore, they informed the trainer that Ace Pearl (USA) would have to be re-certified before being declared to run from stalls again.

246F Galway Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards interviewed S.B. Kelly, rider of Ancient Sands, placed second, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that S.B. Kelly was in breach of Regulation 10 3 (g) in that he had used his whip with his arm above shoulder height. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for five race days (23rd, 27th, 29th, 30th September and 4th October).

The Stewards enquired into an incident in the home straight involving Positive Vibes (GB), ridden by M.M. Monaghan, and Eighteen Summers (USA), ridden by R.P. Whelan, both unplaced, after it appeared that Eighteen Summers (USA) suffered interference. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards deemed the interference to be accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.

246G Sean Cleary Memorial Maiden & The Stewards enquired into possible interference after the turn for home involving the winner Bint Nayef, ridden by C.R. King, Tonabrocky, ridden by K.J. Manning, placed second, Vote of Confidence (USA), ridden by G.F. Carroll, place third, and Alkali, ridden by P.J. Smullen, unplaced, after it appeared that Bint Nayef and Alkali both suffered interference. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned, in the presence of P.D. Deegan, trainer of Bint Nayef, representing C.R. King’s master, David Wachman. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards considered the interference to be accidental in nature. The Stewards therefore made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action. Mr Hugh Williams, Acting Steward, did not attend this enquiry.

Galway Meeting, 10th September 2013

The Stewards fined the following trainer in respect of his non-runner:. Michael Winters, trainer of Lemmond Lady (change in ground conditions) - €200.

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of rider at this meeting:-. Mr. D. Skehan replaced Mr. J.J. King on Johanna’s Joy, trained by J. Reilly (Race 7) Unwell.

247D O’Leary Insurances Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards received a report from the I. Hamilton, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that K.C. Sexton, rider of Cyras Love, weighed in at 1.7lbs overweight.  Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he did not have a difficulty with today’s weight and had a drink after weighing out. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that K.C. Sexton was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore suspended him for one race day (24th September).

The Stewards received a report from I. Hamilton, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that R.T. Dunne, rider of Mon Carlos, weighed in at 1.6lbs overweight.   Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that he had wasted hard to do the correct weight and had a drink after weighing out. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that R.T. Dunne was in breach of Rule 231 and they therefore suspended him for one race day (24th September).

A.P. Crowe, rider of Majestic Benbulben trained by Aidan Anthony Howard, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was pulled up lame.

Andrew J. McNamara, rider of Line View, trained by James Daniel Dullea, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran flat and weakened quickly in this race.

247E Deacy Gilligan Novice Steeplechase & W.J. Burke, trainer of Ashbury, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge made a respiratory noise in this race.

Galway Meeting, 11th September 2013

248C City Publicans Charity Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed John Joseph Hanlon, trainer of Hidden Cyclone, in relation to the late withdrawal of his charge from this race, due to ground conditions. Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned and from Lorcan Wyer, Turf Club Clerk of the Course. Having considered the evidence and the mitigating circumstances in this instance, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered and took no further action.

248D Eventus Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards requested a report from Patrick Neville, trainer of the winner Rockshandy, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horses recent form. Mr Neville reported that his charge has not been quite right this year without anything obviously wrong with him coming to light. He said that the horse’s last run was over hurdles at Ballinrobe where he thought the animal was well in on ratings. However, he said they put blinkers on the horse that day and he seemed to resent them. Previous to that run, the horse competed in a steeplechase at Limerick on soft to heavy ground and may not have appreciated the ground on that occasion. He said that today the horse got his own way in front with an uncontested lead. He said that, together with the better ground and the return to the sort of form he showed last season, may have brought about the apparent improvement in form. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.  

R. Loughran, rider of Martin Cash, trained by Michael Cunningham, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his saddle slipped and he therefore pulled his mount up.

248E Guinness Handicap Steeplechase & M.P. Walsh, rider of Cause Of Causes (USA), trained by Gordon Elliott, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was unable to go the fast early pace, jumped novicey throughout and stayed on past beaten horses in the closing stages.

248F Ryans Cleaning Steeplechase & The Stewards fined Anthony Middleton, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Chaninbar (FR) in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.

R. Walsh, rider of Sin Palo, trained by W.P. Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung throughout the final circuit of this race.

248G www.galwayraces.com I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards fined S.J. Mahon, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Fluspar in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.

Down Royal Meeting, 13th September 2013

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of riders at this meeting:-. P.J. Smullen rode Indigo Iris (reserve), trained by T.G. McCourt (Race 4). N.G. McCullagh rode Togoville (reserve), trained by J.J. Lambe (Race 5). D. Redmond rode Charpoy (USA) (reserve), trained by Lee Smyth (Race 6). C.D. Hayes rode Rising Euro (reserve), trained by Miss Claire Simpson (Race 7).

249A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden & The Stewards received a report from T.J. Smith, Turf Club Senior Veterinary Officer, that the markings and microchip number contained in the passport of Katie Hall, trained by W. McCreery, did not correspond with the filly in accordance with the provisions of Rule 90. Having considered the report, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Katie Hall and referred the matter to the Chief Executive of the Turf Club.

249D Reiss Handicap & The Stewards interviewed D.A McCormack, rider of the winner Elusive Gent, concerning his use of the whip in the last 150 yards of this race.  Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that D.A. McCormack was in breach of R10 (4) in that he had failed to give his mount a chance to respond. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (27th, 29th and 30th September).

The Stewards requested a report from J.T. Gorman, trainer of the winner Elusive Gent, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s recent form. The trainer reported that this gelding was breaking his maiden status today after twenty two attempts. He said he was unable to offer any explanation only to say that this animal is an enigma and is very effective in his exercise at home. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted its content.  

F. Lynch, rider of Roter Baron, trained by Eamonn O’Connell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never let himself down in this race.

249E Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Tabaary (USA), trained by D.K. Weld, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

249F NICFC Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident soon after the start involving Dubai’s Success  (GB), ridden by P.K. Donovan, Afram Blue (GB), ridden by P.C. O’Donnell, and Live Trade, ridden by Gearoid Patrick Brouder, all unplaced, after it appeared that Afram Blue (GB) ran short of room and collided with the running rail. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. & Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that P.K. Donovan had caused the incident by riding carelessly (Rule 214). Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore cautioned him. Lee Smyth, trainer, attended this enquiry with P.C. O’Donnell.

249G Victoria Square Ulster Cesarewitch Handicap & The Stewards interviewed R.P. Whelan, rider of Crystal Earth, placed second, concerning his use of the whip in the latter stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that R.P. Whelan was in breach of R10(3)(a) in that he had hit his horse in front of the saddle while the whip was held in the forehand position, and also R10(3)(f) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (27th, 29th and 30th September).

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Zemario, trained by Joseph G. Murphy, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be blowing hard post race.

Curragh Meeting, 14th September 2013

250A Oxigen Enviromental European Breeders Fund (C&G) Maiden & The Stewards enquired into possible interference in the final furlong involving the winner Obliterator, ridden by E.J. McNamara, No Wunder (GB), ridden by W.J. Lee, placed second, and Centre Of Interest (USA), ridden by K.J. Manning, placed third. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.

The Stewards enquired into an incident approximately two furlongs from the finish involving Highly Toxic, ridden by D.M. Grant, placed fourth, Aussie Valentine, ridden by N G McCullagh, placed fifth, Hatch Hall (GB), ridden by G. F. Carroll, Leafcutter, ridden by P.J. Smullen, and Panama Hat (GB), ridden by C.D. Hayes, all unplaced. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards deemed that any interference was accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.      The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Leafcutter, trained by D K Weld, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

250C Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund ‘Bold Lad’ Sprint Handicap & The Stewards received a report from Ion Hamilton, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that C.R.  King, rider of Kiss The Stars, returned more than 2 lbs overweight on weighing in. Evidence was heard from the rider in the presence of T.G. McCourt, trainer. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards found that C.R. King was in breach of Rule 231(iii) in that he had weighed in more than one and a half pounds heavy. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (29th September). The Stewards furthermore referred C.R. King to the Senior Turf Club Medical Officer for further assessment regarding his allowable minimum weight. 

Following an incident at the start for this race, the Stewards interviewed Ms Tracey Collins, trainer of Arctic, and William Hayes, who was engaged by Ms Collins to assist in the loading of the horse into stalls. Evidence was heard from Ms Collins and from Mr Hayes. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards advised Ms Collins and Mr Hayes to familiarise themselves with the starting stall procedures for the future. 

250D Lanwades Stud Blandford Stakes & F.M. Berry, rider of Alive Alive Oh (GB), trained by T. Stack, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled in this race.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Alive Alive Oh (GB) was found to be post race normal.

250F Tipperary Crystal Amateur Derby (Q.R.) Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident in the straight involving Hurricane Ridge, ridden by Miss K. Harrington, placed third, Ancient Sands, ridden by Mr P.W. Mullins, placed fourth, Chill, ridden by Mr J.J. King, and Alghanem, ridden by Mr D..L Queally, both unplaced, after it appeared that both Hurricane Ridge and Chill ran short of room. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.L. Queally was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had  ridden carelessly. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for three race days (28th, 30th September and 2nd October). 

The Stewards interviewed Mr C.J. Sweeney, rider of Raydari (FR), concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr Sweeney was in breach of Regulation 10 4 in that he had failed to give his mount time to respond. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (28th September).  

Curragh Meeting, 15th September 2013

The Stewards fined the following trainers in respect of their non-runners:-. J.S. Bolger, trainer of Caesaria (Off feed) - €200. A.P. O’Brien, trainer of Wilshire Boulevard (Ground Conditions) - €2,000. A.P. O’Brien, trainer of Wilshire Boulevard (Late withdrawal) - €200. Mrs. John Harrington, trainer of More Of The Same. (Late withdrawal) - €200.

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of riders at this meeting:-. J.A. Heffernan replaced M.C. Hussey on Friendship, trained by A.P. O’Brien (Race 6) (Intended mount a non runner). F.M. Berry replaced E.J. McNamara on Gambling Girl, trained by Mrs. John Harrington (Race 8) (Intended mount a non runner).

251B Flame Of Tara European Breeders Fund Stakes & The Stewards interviewed M.C. Hussey, rider of Minorette (USA), placed third, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Regulation 10.(3)(f), in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore severely cautioned him.

The Stewards enquired into two separate incidents in the latter stages of this race. The first of these incidents inside the two furlong pole involved the winner Avenue Gabriel (GB), ridden by C.D. Hayes, Ballybacka Queen, ridden by P.J. Smullen, placed second, and Dazzling, ridden by J.P. O’Brien, placed fifth, after it appeared that Dazzling ran short of room and had to check. The second incident occurred approximately one furlong from the finish and involved the winner Avenue Gabriel (GB), Minorette (USA), ridden by M.C. Hussey, placed third, and Dazzling, placed fifth, after it appeared that Dazzling ran short of room and had to check. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that in both incidents the interference was accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.  

251D Gain Irish St. Leger & The Stewards received a report from G.F. Carroll, rider of Euphrasia, who was unseated from his mount approximately 150 yards before the winning post. The rider reported that his mount jinked for no apparent reason. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted its content.

Joseph.G. Murphy, trainer of Euphrasia, reported to the Clerk of Scales, that his charge was found to be lame post race.

251G Glanbia Handicap & The Stewards informed Patrick J. Flynn, trainer of Faleena, that his charge would have to be re-certified before being declared to run from stalls again.

A.P. Thornton, rider of Arbitrageur trained by Donal Kinsella, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount became upset in stalls and never travelled throughout this race.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Arbitrageur at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

P.J. Smullen, rider of So Devoted, trained by W.T. Farrell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran flat throughout this race.

C.D. Hayes, rider of Coquette Noire, trained by Kevin Prendergast, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was in the starting stalls for a long time and failed to jump out smartly when the stalls opened.

251H St Brigid Of Kildare European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden & D.P. McDonagh, rider of Ebaniya, trained by John. M. Oxx, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled in this race.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Ebaniya at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

Listowel Meeting, 15th September 2013

The Stewards fined the following trainer in respect of his non-runner:- Paul Nolan, trainer of Illtakeitfromhere (Withdrawn by Order of the Stewards – Passport Irregularity) – 200 euros.

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of riders at this meeting:-. J.S. McGarvey rode Crusoe’s Return (GB) (reserve), trained by Gerard O’Leary (Race 1). Mr R.O. Harding rode Oscar Vespasian (reserve), trained by John Queally (Race 7).

252B Kerry Ingredients & Flavours 3-y-o Hurdle & S.G. McDermott, rider of Duke Of Orange, trained by A.J. McNamara, reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Tooreen Legend, trained by T. Stack, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to the post race normal.

252SD Low Low European Breeders Fund Mares Handicap Hurdle & Roger Joseph McGrath, trainer of Thynetocatcher, reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries that his charge was found to have a burst a blood vessel post race.

252E Cheestrings Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed D.N. Russell, rider of the winner Minella For Value, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found that D.N. Russell was in breach of Regulation 10 3 (e) in that he had used his whip other than down the shoulder or on the hind quarter. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (30th September).

252G Kerry Group I.N.H. Flat Race & Mr. P.D. Collins, rider of Chakisto (FR), trained by Eoin Doyle, reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries that his mount ran short of room soon after the start of this race, lost his action and was pulled up. Chakisto (FR) was subsequently found to be sound.

252H Charleville Cheese Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from R.P. Rath, trainer of the winner Balynaclash Warior, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s recent form. The trainer’s representative reported that this horse did not seem to fully handle the track at Tramore last time. He said that, running on a more galloping track today and the step up in trip, seemed to bring about an improvement from the horse. Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

J.H. Culloty, trainer of Brave Soldier, reported to the Stewards’ Secretaries that his charge was found to have a burst blood vessel post race. This was confirmed to the Stewards by the Racecourse Veterinary Surgeon.

Patrick O. Brady, trainer of King Shabra, reported to the Office of the Governing Bodies on Monday 16th September that his charge was found to have a dirty nose post race.
