233D Friends Of Western Alzheimers Handicap & The Stewards enquired into the apparent improvement in form of Hurricane Sky, placed second and trained by Mr. Charles O’Brien, compared with the horses previous form.
Evidence was heard from Mr. Gerry Abbott, Authorised Representative of the trainer concerned, F.M. Berry, rider, who also rode the horse on his previous run, and Mr. Garry O’Gorman, Senior Turf Club Handicapper.
In his evidence Mr. O’Gorman explained that Hurricane Sky is a lightly raced horse, who on his penultimate run at Navan, competed in his first handicap off a mark of 50, and was beaten 14 lengths. He stated that he dropped the horse three pounds as a result and that on the horse’s most recent start at Gowran Park on 3rd June, he raced off his new mark of 47 and was beaten 22 lengths. He concluded by stating that today’s second place finish was an apparent improvement in form of approximately two stone.
In his evidence Mr. Abbott stated that Hurricane Sky has been working well lately at home, and had worked in blinkers and they seemed to have a beneficial effect. Because he was working so well at home in the blinkers, the trainer decided to let him take his chance today, and the application of these blinkers, coupled with the horse being held up, may have brought about any apparent improvement in form.
In his evidence F.M. Berry stated that he rode Hurricane Sky at Gowran Park on 3rd June. He said that prior to that race he felt that the animal was a mile and a half horse, so he decided to make the running with a view to stretching the field. However, after leading the field for most of the race the horse faded dramatically in the home straight, which he concluded was as a result of making the running. He said that he decided to hold the horse up today. He stated that while he tried to hold him up, the horse was very keen and as a result failed to finish out the race as he had hoped. He also said that Hurricane Sky baulked from the winner and showed reluctance to go past him in the closing stages. Any apparent improvement in form in his opinion was as a result of his change of tactics.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
S. Foley, rider of Shabra Emperor, trained by Mr. Patrick O. Brady, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount suffered accidental interference shortly after jumping from the stalls.

Both trainers claimed that within minutes of the deadline for nominations Mr. Lavery rang both of them claiming that his employer Mr. W.P. Mullins had claimed him to ride today at Killarney thus making him unavailable for Down Royal. Both trainers stated that they contacted Horse Racing Ireland but had no time to make alternative arrangements.
