He expressed his disappointment with the horse’s previous run where he backed off his hurdles and did not jump well. A subsequent examination did not show any abnormality. Today he instructed jockey D.J. Condon to ride the animal handy and hunt him along. 112C Tullamore Rugby Club Celebration Day Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the apparent improvement in form of the winner Save My Blushes (GB), trained by Denis Gerard Hogan, compared with the animal’s recent form.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned who stated that he acquired this animal from another trainer early last September and ran it four times until the end of October.
He felt at that time the animal was not enjoying his racing and was possibly feeling the effects of a lot of racing which resulted in his failure to finish out his races. He advised the owner to give the animal a break and the horse returned to training in January. The horse then returned to the racetrack in mid March where he ran on unsuitable ground and likewise again at the end of March on similar ground. He considered that today’s improved form shown by his charge was a combination of being a previous course and distance winner, getting his favoured better ground which he had triumphed on in the past, being trained more from a paddock than indoors, the application of cheekpieces and the drop in his handicap rating from 109 to 93. He admitted he felt that his charge could run a big race today and advised the owner of this, which may have contributed to the noted market support.
Evidence was also heard from Noel O’Brien, Turf Club Senior National Hunt Handicapper, who stated that this animal had dropped in the ratings from 109 to 93 based on his previous six runs where he was beaten by substantial distances. However, he agreed with the trainer that the horse’s best form was achieved on better ground.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.
The Stewards interviewed D.G. Hogan, trainer and rider of the winner Save My Blushes (GB), concerning his use of the whip in latter stages of this race.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.G. Hogan was in breach of R10 (3)(f) in that he used his whip with excessive frequency and R10(4) in that he failed to give his mount time to respond.

115C navanracecourse.ie Handicap & The Stewards requested a report from J.G. Coogan, trainer of the winner Theyturnedmedown, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s recent run at Tipperary on May 2nd, when he finished last of 10 finishers and was beaten by 39 lengths.
Mr Brendan Coogan, authorised representative for the trainer, reported that at Tipperary the horse was left to run on his own from a low draw after the field had split up in an attempt to find better ground. Having raced alone on the heavy ground, the horse lost interest, was eased down and finished last.
