090B Navan Chairman Handicap & The Stewards interviewed Mr. M. Halford and C.P. Hoban, trainer and rider respectively of The Munster Maori, after the horse left the ring last and was slow going to post which contributed to the race being delayed. The Stewards also noted that this gelding was on the starters list to be loaded first because of past difficulties.
In his evidence Mr. Halford stated that it was not his intention to let The Munster Maori go to post last, but he was delayed as he had two runners in the race. He said he therefore decided to let The Munster Maori leave the parade ring last as he can be buzzy and keen to post. He also said that the saddle had slipped on the horse in the past and so he told his rider to take his time and mind the animal on the way to the start, but did not expect the jockey to go quite so slow. Mr. Halford also stated that he was unaware his horse was on the starters list for loading first.
In his evidence C.P. Hoban confirmed that the horse can be very keen going to the start and with the strong wind today he felt the animal was very buzzy and he was anxious not to get run away with on the way to the start. He said that, as the horse caught sight of the stalls, he became reluctant to continue so he had to lead his mount the remainder of the way to the start.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards cautioned Mr. Halford concerning his responsibilities in this regard. The Stewards also told the trainer that in future he should make arrangements for his horses to leave the parade ring early if he wished them to go to the start slowly.

In his evidence Mr. Smyth was unable to offer any explanation for his filly’s actions, but said that she had never caused any problems at home. He said that she is straightforward to train, has bounced out from stalls on many occasions and received a stalls cert with no difficulty.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered, but reminded Mr. Smyth that a reoccurrence of this behaviour may render his filly liable for suspension in the future.
090F Family Day Handicap & The Stewards received a request from Mr. H.G. Murphy, authorised representative of Mr. John Joseph Murphy, trainer of Ibsen, to substitute the nominated rider R.A. Doyle with S.A. Gray, as the former was unable to weigh out at the correct weight.
Evidence was heard from R. A. Doyle and from Mr. H. G. Murphy.
In his evidence R.A. Doyle explained that he was able claim the 7 lb allowance off today’s weight (8-11) up to two weeks ago, but his weight slipped a little since then. He said that he sweated and ran today to try and lose the weight. However, he said he felt dizzy and unwell after coming out of the sauna and had to drink to rehydrate himself and therefore could not draw the correct weight.
In his evidence Mr. H.G. Murphy stated that he was not prepared to allow the horse carry overweight in today’s race.
Having considered the request, the Stewards cautioned R.A. Doyle concerning his future responsibilities in this regard. The Stewards also advised him to make contact with Turf Club Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adrian McGoldrick in order to get some advise about his diet and weight management.
090G Dunderry Maiden & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Father Of Science, trained by Mr. A.P. O’Brien, was found to be post race normal. Samples were taken for analysis.
