The Stewards interviewed L.F. Roche, rider of The Abbey, trained by Gordon Elliott, concerning his riding throughout this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that he gave his mount an appalling ride for which he had already apologised to the trainer and had forfeited his riding fee. He described his riding from the start stating that his mount was slowly away and lost considerable ground. He added that he was at the rear of the field and racing too wide at the end of the home straight on the first circuit and later on was too far out and wide in the back straight. He admitted that having made up a lot of ground quickly in the back straight his mount tired before the turn into the final straight. He informed the Stewards that Gordon Elliot who was not present at this meeting, had instructed him to race in fifth or sixth position and make one final effort but left him to his own devices as he knew the horse from riding him previously. L.F. Roche admitted that the decisions that he made during the course of the race were incorrect and reiterated that he had given his mount a poor ride. Having viewed the recording and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted L.F. Roche's explanation.
