A total of 33 teams took part in the Pat Smullen Golf Classic at Killeen Castle on Monday, 27th June with the Gleeson Butchers Team victorious on the day.

The hugely popular event, which is now in its 11th year and is held in aid of the Drogheda Memorial Fund, saw many familiar faces from throughout the horse racing industry including Owners, Trainers, Jockeys, Racing Officials and Turf Club Members, gather for the four-ball outing with the winning team captained by Pat Gleeson who has been a regular supporter of the Golf Classic.

For the second consecutive year, Ballydoyle Racing had to settle for second place while the Martinstown Stud team were back in third. The Irish Stable Staff Association team finished in fourth place just ahead of last year’s winners Team Cool Dore, captained by Turf Club member Robert Dore. The Nearest the Pin prizes went to Paddy Wynn-Jones and Maura Jordan.

Established in 1893, the Drogheda Memorial Fund is one of the oldest charities in Ireland and was set up to provide assistance to current and former Trainers and Riders and their families in times of need. Nine-time champion jockey Pat Smullen was a huge supporter of the Golf Classic and kindly donated the Perpetual Cup which his wife, Frances, presented to Pat Gleeson on the day.

Reflecting on the day, Caroline Corballis, chairperson of the Committee of Management for the Drogheda Memorial Fund commented: “On behalf of the Committee of Management I would like to pay a huge gratitude to all who continue to support the Pat Smullen Golf Classic in aid of the Drogheda Memorial Fund.

“I would like to thank our hosts, Killeen Castle and to also give a special mention to Joe Keeling, whose continued support of the event helps to make it all possible and we extend our thanks to the people and businesses who sponsor tee boxes and of course to all of our players who make the day what it is.”
