Irish Racing Calendar, 25th July 2013

The following trainers were fined €200 in each case for the non-notification of a Veterinary Certificate in accordance with the provision of Rule 194(v) (vi):- David Harry Kelly for Red Flight (in season) at Roscommon on 9th July; Sean Aherne for Lord Orphan (FR) (stone bruise) at Cork on 12th July and G.A. Kingston for Embatt (injured) at Sligo on 14th July.

Sligo Meeting, 14th July 2013

178B Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Thats Our Luck, trained by Mrs Mary Whelehan, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

Killarney Meeting, 15th July 2013

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of rider at this meeting: S.G. McDermott rode Molema (reserve), trained by David Edward Finn (Race 6).

179C International Hotel Killarney Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards enquired into possible interference (rule 214) about 150 yards from the finish involving the winner Positive Vibes (GB), ridden by R.P. Whelan, Shalaman, ridden by L.F. Roche, placed second, and Castle Guest, ridden by C.P. Hoban, placed third, and again in the latter stages close to the winning post involving Positive Vibes (GB) and Shalaman.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Denis Gerard Hogan, trainer of Shalaman, attended this enquiry.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that Positive Vibes (GB) had caused interference to Shalaman in both cases and that, in their opinion, Positives Vibes (GB) had improved his placing over Shalaman in so doing. The Stewards therefore reversed the placings of the first and second placed horses with the amended result now to read as follows: First; Shalaman, Second; Positive Vibes (GB), Third: Castle Guest, Fourth; Silver Chief, Fifth; Alpha And Omega.
The Stewards took no further action.

M.M. Monaghan, rider of Moy Diamond trained by M. Halford, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was tightened up on the bend past the stands and checked off heels.

.G. Brouder, rider of Quantum Reach, trained by A.J. McNamara, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount was tightened up on the bend past the stands and checked off heels.

179G Ladies Day This Thursday Flat Race & Mr J.P. McKeown, rider of Curragh Hall, trained by Garrett James Power, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount collided with the running rail rounding the top bend of his own accord.

Mr P.S. Kiely, rider of Queen Of Thecastle, trained by B.J. Hallahan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount stumbled and unseated him at the top bend.

Miss J.M. Mangan, rider of The Next Big Thing, trained by P.J. Colville, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that her mount hung left in this race.

Miss R. Blackmore, rider of Estilaam trained by John Joseph Hanlon, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that her mount checked on the top bend.

Killarney Meeting, 16th July 2013

180A Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden & L.F. Roche, rider of Bog War, trained by Liam P. Cusack, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran very green and hung right throughout.

The Stewards informed A.P. O’Brien, trainer of Il Palazzo (USA) that his charge would have to be re-certified before being declared to run from stalls again.

S.H. James, rider of Danseur De Feu, trained by Kevin Prendergast, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung left in this race.

180B Ross Golf Course Race & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Muaanid (GB), trained by D.K. Weld, at the request of the Stewards and reported that the animal burst a blood vessel in running.

180D Killarney Veterinary Clinic (Q.R.) & The Stewards interviewed Ms K. Walsh, rider of Midnight Oil (GB), placed second, concerning her use of the whip in last two furlongs of this race.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Ms K. Walsh was in breach of Regulation 10(3)(f) in that she used her whip with excessive frequency.
Having taken her previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended her for one race day (30th July).

The Stewards interviewed Mr M.P. Fogarty, rider of the winner Digeanta, concerning his use of the whip in last two furlongs of this race.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr M.P. Fogarty was in breach of Regulation 10(3)(f) in that he used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for four race days (30th and 31st July and 1st and 2nd August).

The Stewards interviewed Miss S. O’Brien, rider of Marchese Marconi, placed third, concerning her use of the whip in last two furlongs of this race.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were of the opinion that Miss S. O’Brien was in breach of Regulation 10(3)(f) in that she used her whip with excessive frequency. Having taken her clean previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore cautioned her.

180F MC Group Handicap Steeplechase & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Silver Canyon, trained by C. Roche, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

A.P. Crowe, rider of The Lady Granuaile (USA), trained by Mrs Pauline Gavin, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount could not go with the pace of the race.

Mrs Pauline Gavin, trainer of The Lady Granuaile (USA), reported to the Office of the Governing Bodies on Wednesday 17th July, that her charge was found to have a twisted front shoe post race.

M.P. Walsh, rider of Baby Whizz trained by Thomas Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount jumped poorly on the final circuit.

180G Malton Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Paul Nolan, trainer of the winner Rising Altitude, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared to the horse’s recent form.
Mr Nolan reported that the horse disappointed him on his last run at Tramore, but in hindsight, the track might not have suited the animal. He said that he put a tongue strap on the horse for his home work and he seemed to improve with this application. As a result he declared the horse to run with a tongue strap today and this may have brought about the improvement.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Pleased As Punch , trained by Augustine Leahy, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be in season post race.

R.J. Jones, rider of Clay Boy, trained by E. McNamara reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount made a noise in running.

Killarney Meeting, 17th July 2013

181A SIKA Signs Maiden & F.M. Berry, rider of Bob Lingo trained by Thomas Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount dwelt in stalls and lost considerable ground.

181E(ii) Ladbrokes Handicap Steeplechase (Division Two) & R.M. Moran, rider of Code Dancer, trained by Patrick Carey, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount felt flat and never travelled throughout.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Code Dancer at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

181F Ashes Bar Glenbeigh Handicap Hurdle & R. Walsh, rider of Letherbelucky, trained by W.P. Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a mistake at the last hurdle on the second circuit and did not travel thereafter. He also reported that his mount became distanced from the other runners in the back straight and was pulled up.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Letherbelucky at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be very distressed with evidence of blood in both nostrils and was found to be clinically abnormal post race.

P.T. Enright, rider of Eagle’s Pass, trained by T.J. O’Mara, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount met with accidental interference on the final bend due to general bunching and did not apportion blame to any other rider.

M.A. Enright, rider of Face Facts, trained by Mrs Prunella Dobbs, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount met with accidental interference on the final bend due to general bunching and did not apportion blame to any other rider.

181G Meet the Roses at Killarney Races Ladies INH Flat Race & The Stewards fined Peter Fahey €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Sunday Serenade in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.

Killarney Meeting, 18th July 2013

182B Killarney Grand Live Music Venue Handicap & The Stewards requested a report from Patrick J. Flynn, trainer of the winner Measured Approach, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge as compared to the horse’s recent form at the Curragh on both the 9th June and 30th June.
David Nolan, Authorised Representative of Patrick J. Flynn, reported that their charge burst a blood vessel at the Curragh 9th June which was reported to the Stewards. He reported that in the 30th June race, the horse was up with the pace from the outset and failed to get home. He said that on this occasion the tactics were changed and the gelding settled well towards the rear of the field, worked his way steadily through horses and finished well.
Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the content of the report.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Gatamalata, trained by Joseph G. Murphy, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

182E Dawn 1% Lite Milk Handicap Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Luimneach Abu, trained by J.P. Broderick, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame behind post race.

182F Dawn Milk Run Handicap Hurdle & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Takeyourcapoff, trained by Mrs. John Harrington, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be blowing hard post race and to have a nasal discharge.

182G Christy Lucey Transport Ltd. I.N.H. Flat Race & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Barney Brook, trained by Mrs Maureen Danagher, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame on her left fore and left hind post race.

Leopardstown Meeting, 18th July 2013

183B Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show Maiden & The Stewards requested a report from a representative of David Wachman, trainer of the winner Goddess Of Love (GB), regarding the apparent improvement in form of this horse as compared with the animal’s recent form.
The representative reported that Goddess Of Love (GB) was ridden prominently at Limerick last time and didn’t seem to see out the longer trip of 1m 3f. He said that over today’s shorter trip of one mile, the filly travelled well in behind the leaders and saw out the race well.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

C.D. Hayes, rider of Sticks And Stones (GB), trained by A. Oliver, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his saddle shifted in the straight and he was forced to ease up on his mount.

183E “Hot House Flowers” Apprentice Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident in the straight involving the winner Fairylike, ridden by Anastasia O’Brien, and Campestral Scene (GB), ridden by C.R. King, unplaced, after it appeared interference had taken place.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned in the presence of Aidan O’Brien, trainer, representing Anastasia O’Brien, and Harry Rogers, trainer, representing C.R. King.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found Anastasia O’Brien in breach of Rule 214 in that she had ridden carelessly. Having taken her record into account, the Stewards cautioned her in relation to her responsibilities in this regard for the future.

L.P. Dempsey, rider of At Boolavogue, trained by W.T. Farrell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined At Boolavogue at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

183G Challenge Stakes & The Stewards interviewed Chris Hayes, rider of Sir Ector (USA), placed second, Pat Smullen, rider of Unaccompanied, placed third, W.M. Lordan, rider of Love and Cherish, placed fourth, and G. Carroll, rider of The Giving Tree, placed fifth, concerning their riding in this race under Rule 212.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered and took no further action.

J.P. O’Brien, rider of El Salvador, trained by A.P. O’Brien, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost his action and was pulled up.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined El Salvador at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be lame post race.

Kilbeggan Meeting, 19th July 2013

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of rider at this meeting:-.
R. Loughran replaced M.A. Enright on Wise Oscar, trained by D.T. Hughes (Race 6) Injured.

184A Tom McCormack Memorial Cup Mares Maiden Hurdle & A. Ring, rider of Curravay, trained by P.J. Rothwell, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount was pulled up lame.

B.J. O’Connell, rider of Miss Nina, trained by Patrick Downey, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount burst a blood vessel and was therefore pulled up.

R.J. Colgan, rider of Station Closed, trained by Mrs Lorna Fowler, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount never travelled on today’s ground.

184D Ladies Day At Kilbeggan Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into an incident just before the winning post on the second circuit involving Sum Laff, ridden by E.J. O’Connell, Derrinlanna, ridden by S. Butler, Clear Hills, ridden by A.P. Heskin, and Milans Cross, ridden by P. Kennedy, all unplaced.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that E.J. O’Connell had ridden carelessly (Rule 214).
Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (2nd August).

The Stewards enquired into possible interference after the final hurdle involving Miss Penny Pincher, ridden by B.J. Geraghty, placed second, and Coosan Belle, ridden by B. Hayes, placed third.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.

Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.


D.N. Russell, rider of Noel Browne, trained by C.A. Murphy, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount never travelled in this race.

184E Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards received a report from the Ian Hamilton, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that B. Hayes, rider of Refused A Name (GB), placed fifth, weighed in approximately 6 lbs underweight and in excess of the amount allowed in accordance with Rule 231.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who stated that his saddle slipped during the course of the race and he lost his lead bag, despite having had the saddle checked at the start. Evidence was also heard from John Joseph Hanlon, trainer of Refused A Name (GB).
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards disqualified Refused A Name (GB) from fifth place and took no further action.

184F Gigginstown House Midlands National Handicap Steeplechase & The Stewards granted permission for the last fence to be omitted from this race in the interest of safety due to the low elevation of the sun.

The Stewards enquired into an incident in the straight, while bypassing the final fence, involving the winner, Double Seven, ridden by A.P. Crowe, Wise Oscar, ridden by R. Loughran, placed second, Tom Horn, ridden by M.P. Walsh, placed third, and Playtime Ben, ridden by P.D. Kennedy, placed fifth.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.

Curragh Meeting, 20th July 2013

The Stewards fined the following trainers in respect of their non-runners:-.
T. Stack, trainer of Alive Alive Oh (GB), (Ground – see enquiry) €4,000.
George J. Kent, trainer of Custom Cut (Ground) - €630.

185B Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital European Breeders Fund Fillies Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident inside the final furlong involving Conversational, ridden by C.D. Hayes, dead heated for fourth place. Angela’s Dream, ridden by C.P. Keane, Tropical Mist, ridden by D.M. Grant, and One True Love, ridden by J.P. O’Brien, all unplaced.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that the incident was accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.

185E boylesports.com Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident inside the final two furlongs involving Tobann, ridden by K.J. Manning, placed fourth, Ask Dad (GB), ridden by J.P. Murtagh, placed fifth, Strait Of Zanzibar (USA), ridden by W.J. Lee, Lightnin Hopkins, ridden by G.F. Carroll, and Stones Peak, ridden by C.R. King, all unplaced.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned in the presence of Jim O’Neill, Assistant trainer to J.M. Oxx, who accompanied C.R. King in the Stewards Room.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that any interference was accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.

185F Kilsaran International Handicap & The Stewards enquired into an incident inside the final furlong involving Abbey Vale, ridden by G.F. Carroll, placed second, and
Regulation, ridden by S. Foley, placed third.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that any interference was accidental in nature and they therefore took no further action.

185G Darley Irish Oaks & The Stewards enquired into possible interference inside the final furlong involving the winner Chicquita, ridden by J.P. Murtagh, Venus De Milo, ridden by J.A. Heffernan, placed second, and Scintillula, ridden by K.J. Manning, placed fourth.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that, while minor interference had occurred, they were not satisfied that the winner had improved her finishing position as a result.
The Stewards therefore made no alteration to the Judge’s placings and took no further action.

The Stewards interviewed James Stack, Assistant trainer to T. Stack, in relation to the withdrawal of his charge Alive Alive Oh due to ground conditions prior to this race.
Evidence was heard from the Assistant trainer concerned.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards were not satisfied that the reason for the withdrawal was valid and fined the trainer, through his representative, €4000 (1% of the value of the race) in accordance with Rule 194 (iv).

Jim Crowley, rider of Talent (GB), trained by Ralph Beckett (in GB), reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount ran freely and was unsuited to the slow pace of the race.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Talent (GB) was found to be post race normal.

185H Goffs Maiden & The Stewards requested a report from Patrick Prendergast, trainer of the winner Manalapan, regarding the apparent improvement in form of his charge compared with the horse’s recent form.
The trainer reported that his charge disappointed in his last two races when wearing a tongue tie. He stated that the horse has had numerous problems in training. He added that he is a difficult horse with a breathing problem, having had corrective surgery in the past.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

Curragh Meeting, 21st July 2013

The Stewards fined the following trainer in respect of his non-runner:-.
D.K. Weld, trainer of Johnny Lynch (Off Feed) - €200.

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of rider at this meeting:-.
A.P. Thornton rode Lisnagirl, trained by Lee Smyth (Race 3) See Enquiry.

186A Hanlon Concrete European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden & The Stewards interviewed Lee Smyth, trainer of Lisnagirl, concerning the apparent failure to nominate a rider before the designated time for his charge in this race, contrary to Regulation 3 and Rule 195.
Evidence was heard from the trainer concerned, who stated that this filly has a history of poor performance and as a consequence it became difficult to find a rider for her today. He acknowledged that he was in breach of the Rule and Regulation.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards allowed the late nomination of A.P. Thornton to ride Lisnagirl, but advised Lee Smyth to ensure he confirms a rider nomination in good time in the future.

S. Foley, rider of Hannah’s Magic, trained by A.L.T. Moore, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung badly left in this race.

186C Irish Field Grey Horse Handicap & The Stewards enquired into possible interference in the straight involving the winner Toccata Blue, ridden by E.J. McNamara, Susiescot, ridden by P.J. Smullen, placed second, Smoke Charger, ridden by C.D. Hayes, placed fifth, and Patrickswell, ridden by L.F. Roche unplaced.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings, deemed any interference to be accidental in nature and took no further action.

186F boylesports.com Rockingham Handicap & The Stewards interviewed Luke Leadbitter, rider of the winner Whozthecat, concerning his use of the whip in this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned in the presence of his Master, Declan Carroll, trainer (in GB).
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Luke Leadbitter was in breach of Regulation 10 3 (e) in that he had used his whip with his arm above shoulder height.
Having taken his record into account, the Stewards therefore cautioned him as to his future behaviour in this regard.


The Stewards requested a report from I.J. Brennan, rider of Bubbly Bellini, regarding his unseating close home in this race.
The rider reported that his mount accidentally clipped a heel and unseated him. He did not apportion any blame to any other rider for his unseating.
Having considered the report and viewed a recording of the race, the Stewards accepted the report and took no further action.

186G Goffs Fillies Maiden & P.J. Smullen, rider of Ramone, trained by W.T. Farrell, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount hung left out of stalls, lost her action and was pulled up.

W.J. Lee, rider of Long Away, trained by K.J. Condon, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount received a cut during the running of this race.

Tipperary Meeting, 21st July 2013

The Stewards authorised the following nomination and substitution of riders at this meeting:-.
R.J. Molloy replaced M.A. Enright on Geraldine Gold, trained by Shane Nolan (Race 1) Injured.
B.T. O’Connell replaced M.A. Enright on Hidden Shamrock, trained by Leonard Whitmore (Race 5) Injured.
A. Ring replaced M.A. Enright on Moncherie, trained by J.P. Fogarty (Race 6) Injured.

187E Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from M.J. Bolger, rider of Grove Field, in relation to the fall of his mount on the entrance to the back straight on the first circuit in this race.
M.J. Bolger reported that his mount slipped up independently at this point.
Having considered the report and viewed a recording of the fall, the Stewards accepted the content of the report.

187F Bet Online At Thetote.com Galway Plate Trial Handicap Steeplechase & R. Walsh, rider of Sicilian Secret, trained by W.P. Mullins, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount lost his action before the last fence and consequently was pulled up.

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Sicilian Secret at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

187G Jim Ryan Racecourse Services I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards fined P. Meany, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Celtic Fashion in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.
