Limerick Meeting, 1st April 2012 (1st Race)

The Chief Executive of the Turf Club has investigated the background to the withdrawal of ‘Roman Cavalery’ from the Family Fun Day (C&G) Maiden Hurdle at Limerick on 1st April 2012 due to a passport irregularity.
On the day in question the trainer’s representative Mr. Michael Gunn told the Stewards that there was a passport irregularity and that the connections did not want to run the horse until the issue was resolved.  He further informed the Stewards that the Turf Club was already aware of the situation, having been informed by the trainer.
Following an investigation, it was discovered that the trainer’s contact was with Horse Racing Ireland and not the Turf Club.  Horse Racing Ireland has confirmed that the trainer, M.F. Morris rang its Registrations Department on Friday afternoon (prior to the day of racing at Limerick) to say that the name for this horse had been spelt wrong but that the horse had already run in Point-to-Points.  Horse Racing Ireland subsequently checked the original naming form and realised that both Weatherbys and Horse Racing Ireland had spelt the name incorrectly and that a correction would have to be published in the Irish Racing Calendar, including the lines of form.  M.F. Morris decided that he would not run the horse until the error was corrected and the spelling of the horse’s name changed to the correct spelling ‘Roman Cavalry’.
In view of the above it is not necessary to take any further action and the matter is now concluded.

Dundalk Meeting, 18th April 2012

Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.

Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.P. McDonogh was in breach of Regulation 10 2(b), in that he continued to use the whip after his chance of winning or being placed had clearly gone. Having taken his good record into account, the Stewards therefore severely cautioned him concerning his future responsibilities in this regard.

Evidence was heard from Mr. Banahan, who stated that the start of this race was four minutes late. He explained that both of Mr. A.P. O’Brien’s runners arrived at the start well behind all the other horses, which contributed to the delay in proceedings.
Evidence was subsequently heard from Mr. Pat Keating, representing Mr A.P. O’Brien, trainer, who stated that while he accepted that the two horses left the parade ring last, he was not aware of the fact that they arrived at the start that late. He added that one of the fillies was making her racecourse debut and that he was anxious for them to make their way nice and slowly to the start.
Having considered the evidence, the Stewards severely cautioned Mr O’Brien, through his representative, concerning his future responsibilities to avoid delaying the start. He was also advised to request permission in future if he needs to leave the parade ring late or walk to the start with any horse that he has concerns about.

Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that whilst Mobile Sizer (GB) did interfere with Sir Lynx, they were not satisfied that the winner had improved its finishing position as a result of this interference. The Stewards therefore made no alteration to the the Judge’s placing. Futhermore, the Stewards felt the interference was accidental in nature and therefore took no further action.

Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence P.W. Flood stated that his instructions were to ride his mount on her own and not in amongst horses, as she is claustrophobic and to take things from there and finish as best as he could. He said the field went quick and he dropped his mount out at the rear of the field. He said going down the back straight he let his mount fill her lungs and she started to take hold of the bit and passed a number of tiring horses. Turning in, he said he had to let the mare fill her lungs again. He said at that stage his intention was to try and finish in third position with a strong drive after jumping the last. He said he did that to the best of his ability, but his mount just failed to take third place. He felt if he got after his mount earlier in the straight she may not have got home and may not have even finished fourth.
In his evidence Mr. Flannery confirmed the instructions and expressed satisfaction with the ride. He said it was the mare’s first run after a break and she was as fit as he could get her at home. He said the mare had run well once before when held up, but turned sour after trying to make the running in some of her races. He said he felt she may benefit from being held up today, as she seems to like passing horses. He said he had no plans for her, but that on the advice of his rider after this race, he may consider running her in a higher grade handicap with a lower weight after she carried top weight today.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer, which stated that Bean Chroi Bhriste was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations offered.

Mr. Foley reported that his charge likes to dictate in his races, but the animal was not as handy as he would have liked at Cork and switched himself off. On this occasion, however, the horse returned to his familiar tactic of dictating matters and this had the desired effect.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the content.

Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the content.

Mr. Oliver reported that his charge was standing in stalls for a long period at Leopardstown and became agitated. He said that the horse then missed the break, but hit the front before the turn in and then faded. He felt that today’s better ground compared to the quick surface at Leopardstown was a contributing factor, while he also felt that his horse got the run of the race today.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the content.
