048D Navan Lock & Key Maiden & The Stewards interviewed W.J. Lee, rider of Roja Dove, concerning his use of the whip.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found that W.J. Lee was in breach of Regulation 10.2 (a) in that he had used his whip down the shoulder while in the forehand position. Having taken his record in this regard into account, the Steward therefore suspended him for one race day (30th March).

048E Meath News & Sport Handicap & The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Baitsileir, trained by Mr. J.S. Bolger, was found to be post race normal.

Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. The Stewards did, however, find that S. Foley was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly, and having taken his record in this regard into account, they therefore suspended him for one race day (30th March).

The Stewards fined Mr. A.L.T. Moore, trainer, €65 for failing to fit a tongue tie to his charge Dart Queen (GER) prior to entering the parade ring for this race.

Down Royal Meeting, 17th March 2012

The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting: Mr.  C.M. Murphy replaced A.P. Crowe (Stewards permission) on Touchthewood, trained by Mrs D.A. Love (first race); I.J. McCarthy rode High Destiny (reserve), trained by Mr. Nigel Carolan (second race) and Mr. S.G. Carey replaced Mr. R.P. McNamara (see enquiry) on By The Banks, trained by Mr. Denis W. Cullen (seventh race).

049A Daily Mirror Maiden Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of The Drunken Dr, ridden by B. Hayes, and trained by Mr. Niall Moran.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
In his evidence B. Hayes stated that his instructions were to hold onto his mount as long as he could in order that the animal saw out the trip better than he did in his previous two hurdle races to date. He said his mount did not travel on the ground early on and may improve when encountering a sounder surface. He said he held onto the horse for as long as he could and that the horse saw out the trip well enough. He said his mount jumped adequately and he did not use his whip because he was instructed not to as the horse showed a reluctance in the past when he was hit with the whip. He felt that had he got after his mount earlier he may not have got home. In hindsight, he said that if he had ridden the horse stronger hands and heels after the last, the animal may have finished a place closer but no more. He also said that the horse made a respiratory noise after the last hurdle.
In his evidence Mr. Moran confirmed the instructions and explained the background to the horse. He expressed satisfaction with the ride but felt that his rider could have been stronger hands and heels from the last hurdle to the winning line. He explained that he was in two minds whether to run the horse after the ground changed overnight to soft, but let him take his chance. The horse has worn blinkers in past but he wanted to let his charge see the hurdles today and so left them off. He said he may put the blinkers on the horse again in future. He said his immediate plan for the horse is to run him on the flat at Leopardstown where hopefully he will encounter better ground.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer stating that The Drunken Dr was found to be post race normal.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the explanations of Mr. Moran and severely cautioned B. Hayes to be seen to make more of an effort in future.
Furthermore, the Stewards felt that B. Hayes was in breach of Rule 213 (ii) in that he failed to report on two separate occasions both at scales on weighing in and afterwards to the Stipendiary Steward anything that may have affected the running of his horse in the race (i.e that his mount made a respiratory noise). The Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day. (31st March)

P.G. Callaghan, rider of Bowmore Rock, trained by Mr. Lindsay Woods, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount made a respiratory noise in running and was therefore pulled up.

The Stewards fined Mr. Niall Moran, trainer, €130 for lodging a passport in respect of Drummanmoremaster in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer’s written assurance that the vaccinations were in order.

Mr. Niall Moran, trainer of Drummanmoremaster, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his charge finished lame.

049B Martinstown Opportunity Handicap Hurdle & Mr. Adrian Murray, trainer of Leney Lou, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that the girths broke and as a result his charge was pulled up.

049D Daily Mirror Hunters Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed Mr. N. McParlan, rider of Mat Hill, placed second, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr. McParlan was in breach of Regulation 10 2 (f) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency. Having taken his good record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (31st March).

Mr. G.M. Mangan, rider of Big Shu, trained by Mr. Peter Maher, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled and blew hard post race. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that Big Shu was found to be in respiratory distress post race.

049F Bet With The Tote Beginners Steeplechase & Andrew J. McNamara, rider of The Shepherd, trained by Mr. Gordon Elliott, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount found nothing when asked to quicken from the fourth last fence. The Turf Club Veterinary Officer reported to the Stewards that The Shepherd was found to be blowing hard post race.

049G Winged Love I.N.H. Flat Race & The Stewards received a request from Ms. Valerie Keatley, authorised representative of Mr. Denis W. Cullen, trainer of By The Banks, to substitute the declared rider Mr. R.P. McNamara with Mr. S.G. Carey.
Ms. Keatley reported that the trainer confirmed Mr. R.P. McNamara rang yesterday looking for the ride, and was declared on his charge. However, she said the trainer received  word today from a third party that Mr. McNamara would be unable to ride the horse.
Having considered this request, the Stewards allowed the substitution but felt that Mr. McNamara was in breach of Rule 196 (v). Having taken his record in this regard into account, they therefore fined him €500 for failing to show.

050C Michael O’Murchadha Memorial Novice Handicap Hurdle & The Stewards enquired into possible interference inside the last 150 yards involving the winner Echo Bob, ridden by A.E. Lynch, and Galzig, ridden by A.D. Leigh, placed second, after it appeared that the latter was carried wide on the run to the line.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. They did, however, find that A.E. Lynch had ridden carelessly (Rule 214) and having taken his previous record in this regard into account, the Stewards suspended him for two race days (3rd and 5th April).

050D Richard Browne & Sons Ltd. Hurdle & The Stewards interviewed S.J. Crimin, rider of the winner Whodoyouthink, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.

Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that S.J. Crimin was in breach of Regulation 10.2 (a) in that he had used his whip down the shoulder while in the forehand position. Having taken the riders previous record into account, the Stewards severely cautioned him in this regard for the future and advised him to familiarise himself with guidelines pertaining to use of the whip.

The Stewards interviewed J.R. Barry, rider of Wilde Wit Pleasure, placed second, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
Evidence was heard from the rider concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that J.R. Barry was in breach of Regulation 10.2 (f) in that he had used his whip with excessive frequency and Regulation 10.2 (a) in that he had used his whip down the shoulder while in the forehand position. Having taken his previous good record in this regard into account, the Stewards therefore suspended him for one race day (31st March).

051C Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Novice Hurdle & The Stewards requested a report from Mr. Thomas Byrne, representing Mr. W.J. Burke, trainer of the winner My Murphy, regarding the apparent improvement in form of the horse compared to his previous run at Clonmel on the 2nd February where he finished fifth of six finishers and was beaten 62 lengths.
Mr. Byrne reported that the horse may not have acted on the deep and very testing heavy ground at Clonmel and that in his opinion the animal may have benefited from the less testing conditions today.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

The trainer reported that the change to waiting tactics today possibly brought about the improvement compared to the run at Leopardstown where the horse raced more prominently and became tired close home.
Having considered the report, the Stewards noted the explanation offered.

052E Charleville Cheese Beginners Steeplechase & The Stewards interviewed P.A. Gallagher, rider of Play The Wing (GB), placed fourth, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages.
