303F Naas Annual Membership H'cap Hdle

D.N. Russell, rider of Mind The Pennies, trained by William Durkan, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled and consequently was pulled up in running.

N.P. Madden, rider of Morning Ireland, trained by Niall Madden, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount needs a longer trip.

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Crowded Room, ridden by M.P. Flanagan, and trained by Michael Cunningham. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. Michael Cunningham, trainer, stated that this animal had broken down three years ago and missed a seasons racing as a consequence. He had been trying to find suitable ground recently but did not fulfill an engagement until today. He added that all the animals best previous form had been over longer distances and on softer ground conditions and therefore instructed the rider to give the animal a chance early on, do not put him on his head and allow him to come home. In his opinion his charge was unable to go the pace when the race quickened but stayed on past tired horses in the latter stages. He felt that the rider could have been more aggressive from the second last flight. He advised the Stewards that he intended to keep his charge over hurdles and may take an opportunity to race at Navan over 2miles 7 furlongs at a forthcoming fixture. M.P. Flanagan, rider, confirmed the instructions and added that his mount was caught for pace when the race quickened but stayed on past tired horses. The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Crowded Room was post race normal. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards noted the trainers explanation and cautioned M.P. Flanagan to be seen to make more of an effort in the future.
