Protecting the Integrity & Reputation of Irish Horseracing

Gowranpark 10th August 2016

The Stewards authorised the following substitutions of riders at this meeting:

D.J. Redmond rode Adarenna, trained by John Joseph Hanlon (Race 6)(No rider available at time of nominations. See enquiry))

218A Irish Stallion Farms EBF M'dn

The Turf Club Veterinary Officer examined Moritzburg (GB), trained by M.Halford, at the request of the Stewards and reported the animal to be post race normal.

The Stewards enquired into the slow start of Moritzburg (GB) where he subsequently lost a lot of ground in the early stages. Derek Cullen, Turf Club Starter, stated that the horses loaded into stalls but K.J. Manning, rider of Legitimus, shouted that he was having difficulty with his mount. Consequently he waited until that rider was satisfied with his mount and released the starting mechanism when all riders were ready. He was adamant that K.J. Manning was the only rider who expressed any difficulty. Matt White, Stalls Handlers Team Leader concurred with Derek Cullen's evidence and added that the handler who assisted in holding Moritzburg (GB) when it became fractious in the stalls did not hear any shout from C.P. Hoban expressing any problem and furthermore that K.J. Manning was the only rider to call the starters attention. C.P. Hoban, rider, stated that he had clearly shouted to the starter that he was not ready to start but the gates opened after K.J. Manning had given a positive call. Michael Halford, trainer of Moritzburg (GB) relayed the explanation that C.P. Hoban had given to him post race. Having considered all the evidence, the Stewards were satisfied that a fair start had been effected and took no further action.

218B Join the Gowran Park Park Club Nursery

D. O'Brien, rider of Pronounced, trained by Joseph Patrick O'Brien, reported to the Stewards' Secretaries that his mount never travelled throughout this race.

218F Golf Membership Gowran Apprentice H'cap

The Stewards interviewed John Joseph Hanlon, trainer, concerning the failure to nominate a rider before the designated time for Adarenna. Evidence was heard from the trainer who stated that this race was restricted to five, seven and ten pound claiming apprentices which made it very difficult to secure a rider for a seventeen runner contest. He added that Jockeys Agents were unable to find a suitable rider. He then relied on the first reserve not getting into the race which would allow D.J. Redmond, it's nominated rider, to become available. When this materialised he requested permission for his nomination. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards accepted the explanation offered and allowed the nomination of D.J. Redmond to ride Adarenna.

The Stewards enquired into incidents both before and after the turn out of the back straight involving Jessamine, ridden by D.P. Linehan, placed second and Ask Katie, ridden by P.J. O'Hanlon, placed sixth, where it appeared that Ask Katie had received interference on two occasions. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Patrick J. Flynn, trainer of Jessamine, attended this enquiry with D.P. Linehan. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that D.P. Linehan had caused both incidents by riding carelessly and therefore suspended him for 4 racedays having taken his previous record into consideration.

The Stewards fined K.P. Moriarty €200 for failing to arrive at the racecourse to weigh out for his nominated ride on Regal Power (GB).
